US retailer Price Chopper plans to join the list of grocery retailers that offer irradiated beef in their stores.

Price Chopper will offer shoppers in their 102 stores irradiated fresh ground beef. The irradiation process is thought to help eliminate harmful bacteria such as E.coli, listeria and salmonella.

The company’s stores are situated throughout the northeastern region of the US, which has recently been hit by outbreaks of listeria.

Yesterday, US supermarket retailer Hy-Vee announced it was to sell irradiated beef in its 188 stores.
