A newly revised advisory on seafood and mercury, issued by the Food and Drug Administration, “reiterates the health benefits and the safety of canned fish,” according to the National Food Processors Association (NFPA). FDA’s advisory is specifically targeted to pregnant women and women of childbearing age.
“FDA’s advisory makes the case that canned fish can be an important part of a balanced diet for pregnant women,” said Dr. Rhona Applebaum, NFPA’s Executive Vice President for Scientific and Regulatory Affairs. “It notes that pregnant women and women of childbearing years can safely consume and enjoy canned fish, shellfish, smaller ocean fish and farm-raised fish, and urges women to consume a variety of different species.”
Dr. Applebaum pointed out that “In addition to FDA, a variety of sources of diet and health information – including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the various Food Guide Pyramids (for adults and children) and groups such as the American Heart Association – say that fish consumption is a safe and essential part of a healthful diet for all consumers. Many scientific and medical studies have documented the health benefits of canned fish, which are an excellent low-fat source of protein, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, including fatty acids and fish oil.”
NFPA is the voice of the $460 billion food processing industry on scientific and public policy issues involving food safety, nutrition, technical and regulatory matters and consumer affairs.
