US grocery retailer Safeway has appointed Dean Ornish, M.D., a leading expert on nutrition and wellness, to chair the company’s newly formed Advisory Council on Health and Nutrition.

“Our relationship with such a credible expert is an important step in developing our company’s commitment to health and wellness, and providing information to our customers about making healthier choices at our stores,” said Brian Cornell, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Safeway.


Safeway will collaborate with Dr. Ornish on several health and wellness initiatives including: advising the company on product development, including a new line of organic products and expanding the company’s ready-to-eat “Eating Right” brand of healthier frozen entrees; assisting Safeway with a range of consumer communication by strengthening the nutrition and wellness content of its weekly print and in-store advertising, as well as the company’s monthly Every Season magazine; and building a stronger and clearer nutritional labelling programme for perishable and non-perishable Safeway branded products across the store.
