Safeway (NYSE:SWY) is continuing to expand its presence in Arizona. Today, the company announced it has entered into an agreement to purchase 11 ABCO stores in Arizona. Seven of the stores are located in Tucson and four are in the Phoenix market. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Safeway to grow in these markets. We look forward to serving our current and new customers with the many products and services Safeway has to offer, including a full service deli, a bakery with fresh items made from scratch, a produce department with fruits and vegetables from around the world, a full service floral department and a full service pharmacy,” said Rojon Hasker, Phoenix Division president, Safeway Inc.

The company expects the transaction to close in early March. Each store will be closed for a short period of time for remodeling and will reopen as a Safeway store. ABCO employees will be given first priority in applying for jobs at the new Safeway store locations.

2140 W. Grant, Tucson
9125 E. Tanque Verde, Tucson
9705 N. Thornydale Rd., Tucson
9050 E. Valencia Rd., Tucson
2000 E. Irvington, Tucson
7177 E. Tanque Verde, Tucson
9460 E. Golf Links, Tucson

The company’s Phoenix Division operates 90 stores. Safeway is a Fortune 50 company and one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America with annualized sales of approximately $32 billion. The company operates 1,690 stores and currently has some 193,000 employees. Its common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SWY.
