Sara Lee Corporation announced today that its Board of Directors has promoted Janet E. Bergman to senior vice president of the corporation and Richard L. Armstrong to vice president of the corporation and president, Sara Lee Foods U.S.-Supply Chain, effective immediately.

As Senior Vice President – Investor Relations and Corporate Affairs, Bergman, 42, oversees Sara Lee’s global investor relations, and internal and external corporate communications. Based at the corporation’s worldwide headquarters in Chicago, she will continue to report to Executive Vice President and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer Cary D. McMillan.

Bergman joined Sara Lee as executive director of investor relations in 1988. The following year, she was promoted to corporate vice president and in 1993 she was named vice president of investor relations and corporate affairs. Prior to joining Sara Lee, Bergman was an analyst with Putnam Management Company in Boston.

Bergman earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Yale University and a master of business administration degree from Harvard University’s School of Business Administration. She became a chartered financial analyst in 1988.

Armstrong, 49, most recently served as chief operating officer of Sara Lee’s Galileo Foods in San Lorenzo, Calif. With his promotion to vice president of the corporation and president, Sara Lee Foods U.S.-Supply Chain, Armstrong will be responsible for overseeing procurement, manufacturing and distribution of the company’s U.S. food products.

With more than 30 years experience in the processed meats industry, Armstrong began his career at Hygrade Food Products Corporation in Tacoma, Wash. He held a variety of positions at Hygrade, rising to general manager in 1987.

Since Sara Lee’s acquisition of Hygrade in 1989, Armstrong has served in several positions of increasing responsibility throughout the company’s U.S. foods division, including general manager of Hillshire Farm & Kahn’s New London, Wis., facility and president of Memphis-based King Cotton Foods. Armstrong will continue to report to Robert Kopriva, vice president of Sara Lee Corporation, and president and chief executive officer of Sara Lee Foods U.S.
