Bio-Cide’s invention provides a method for treating and disinfecting seafood using an acidified chlorite solution. This patent is the result of work that Bio-Cide began in 1990 when it initiated an application for approval from the FDA for use of its product on seafood.

The approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was granted last year and the commercialisation rights protected under the patent were just issued. The patent and approval are based on Bio-Cide’s proprietary acidified sodium chlorite solutions using chlorine dioxide technology. The FDA approval specifically establishes the guidelines for use of acidified sodium chlorite as an antimicrobial agent.
