Senator Cap Dierks of Ewing has asked the Nebraska Department of Agriculture to investigate whether food retailers are relabelling packaged meat in order to push back the sell-by dates.

Dierks’ move comes in response to an NBC report the claimed some of the US’ largest grocery stores routinely repackage and re-date meat. He likened the relabelling of meat to mileometer fraud, although he conceded the TV report may have overstated the threat to food safety.
“The practice of meat re-dating appears to be a consumer misrepresentation that I would view as similar to rolling back the odometer on used vehicles,” he said in a statement.
“Consumers rely on such dating to judge the quality and value of the product, and I would think we should expect food retailers to be honest with the consumer.”
