Sequoia NET.com has announced its participation in the development of GroceryStreet.com, a site that will enable grocery retailers nationwide to provide online shopping services to their customers. Sequoia NET.com is providing the design, as well as the application development, implementation and hosting services for the site, which is scheduled to launch mid-July featuring five Detroit-area grocery retailers.

In addition to the technical and graphic expertise that helped develop the look, feel and functionality of the site, Sequoia NET.com provided the expanded eBusiness solutions, start-up consulting and marketing strategy to assist GroceryStreet.com in its development. Through GroceryStreet.com, consumers will be able to access Web sites for several area grocery stores, allowing consumers to shop online using enhanced features such as shopping by meal planners, recipes, nutritional information, aisles or specials, with either pick-up or delivery service available.

“Sequoia NET.com provides complete eBusiness solutions for start-ups, as well as established companies,” said John Bamberger, founder and CEO of Sequoia NET.com. “We’ve found that the eBusiness solutions we provide, when paired with our technical development capabilities, offer the best foundation for a new business or a company seeking to expand the boundaries of its current technology. We expect GroceryStreet.com to be very well-received in the Metro area.”

Online grocery sales are expected to approach $600 million by the end of this year, and more than double by 2004, according to a survey featured in Business 2.0 (6/27/00). Sequoia NET.com is facilitating GroceryStreet.com’s entrance into this quickly expanding market.

Locally, GroceryStreet.com will provide the platform for several Detroit- area grocers. Stores already signed on to begin service in mid-August include Value City Markets (Livonia, Warren), Shopper’s Market (Centerline), Vegas Market (Warren) and Hollywood Market (Troy).

“GroceryStreet.com will be more than just another online grocery site,” said Francie Black, president and founder of GroceryStreet.com. “For instance, shoppers will be able to search for foods based on specific health concerns they may have, such as diabetes or high cholesterol. Services like these will offer additional value to online shoppers.”

Black says GroceryStreet.com will help “level the playing field,” and allow consumers to purchase groceries via the Internet at their preferred neighborhood markets.

“Several large grocery chains have already taken advantage of the Internet to enable online consumer shopping,” Black explained. “GroceryStreet.com will provide a way for grocery chains, as well as independent grocers, to offer their customers more conveniences and services as the supermarket chains do that are currently utilizing the Internet.”

“Essentially, GroceryStreet.com is an ASP [application service provider] for grocery stores,” comments Bamberger. “GroceryStreet.com will provide an online service for local stores and national chains, resulting in a cost- efficient way to sell groceries over the Internet saving retailers the time, money and expertise required to build and maintain premier Internet sites. It’s a very good business model.”

Sequoia NET.com will continue to provide eBusiness consulting services to GroceryStreet.com beyond its launch later this month and as the site continues to expand, signing additional grocers and attracting sponsors and advertisers.
