A law firm is mounting a case against three of the USA’s largest grocers, arguing that shoppers should be informed on packaging that the farmed salmon they are sold is not naturally pink, but dyed.

Three separate lawsuits, proposed as class actions, have been filed against Kroger, Safeway and Albertson’s.

Lawyer Paul Kampmeier of Smith & Lowney of Seattle commented to APN: “Pink sells salmon… To artificially colour salmon without giving that information to consumers, we believe that’s unfair and deceptive, and it’s also against federal law.”

Farmed fish are given feed with added pigment to give them the pink colour wild salmon gain by eating krill and other small shellfish.

The lawsuits seek damages and hope to result in the courts requiring supermarkets to label farmed salmon as artificially coloured.
