US agribusiness J R Simplot has announced that its Simplot Meat Products plant in Nampa, Idaho is to close.

The facility’s around 270 employees were informed in June that the plant would be closed by 19 September if a buyer was not found.

Company spokesman Fred Zerza said Simplot had been trying to sell the plant because it had not been turning a profit.

Since last November, the company has closed several facilities in Idaho, including a French fry processing line and an ethanol plant.
