Patrick Cudahy, a subsidiary of US meat processor Smithfield Foods, is to invest US$12.2m to reopen an empty food processing facility in Sioux Center, Iowa to process bacon.

In a move that is expected to create 136 jobs, Wisconsin-based Patrick Cudahy plans to remodel the plant, build two precooked bacon production lines and install other bacon processing equipment, reported the Associated Press. Eventually, the company hopes to add three more production lines.

Quik-To-Fix Foods operated the plant previously, but ceased operations there more than two years ago. Smithfield purchased the company in 2001.

The plant is to be operated by the Golden Crisp Premium Foods division of Patrick Cudahy.
