Texas Department of Health (TDH) officials say consumers who have the recalled product should not eat it and should return it to the place purchased.

The recalled ready-to-eat product, also known as carne seca and machacado, is sold in 1- ounce, 4-ounce and 1-pound quantities in preprinted cellophane bags. The recalled packages contain the company’s Texas establishment number 478 and lot number 73. The lot number is on a stick-on label on the back of each package.

Salmonella was found in a sample from lot 73 collected by TDH meat safety officials and tested in TDH’s Austin laboratory.

Some 305 pounds of the recalled product are believed to have been shipped to distributors and retailers in several Texas cities including Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Harlingen, Laredo, McAllen, Mission, Rio Grande City, Roma, San Isidro and Zapata.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps that can last for several days. Most people who become ill with Salmonella infection, or salmonellosis, recover without treatment, but the infection can be deadly. Infants, the elderly and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to experience severe effects.

TDH is monitoring compliance with the recall and reports that so far no illnesses have been linked to the product.

Last September, Sun Valley Products recalled lots 62, 63, 64, 65 and 66 of the shredded dried beef product. The recall of lot 73 is an extension of the September recall.
