The restaurant is owned and operated by Bulgarian native and resident Dimitar Serafimov and his friend and business partner Liudmil Stankov. Serafimov, a former attorney, spent six and a half years in Canada, where he became acquainted with the submarine sandwich concept. Stankov, a restaurateur in the Bulgarian capitol of Sofia, comes to the partnership with more than ten years of experience.
The first Bulgarian Subway restaurant is located in the main commercial district of downtown Sofia near the monument of Patriarch Evtimii, a popular meeting place, convenient to schools, offices, shopping and nightlife. The restaurant itself is one of the first in Europe to feature Subway’s new Tuscany décor, inspired by the colors and textures found in the Tuscany region of Italy, the group said in a press statement. Taking advantage of a wide sidewalk and the shade of several large chestnut trees, the restaurant also offers patrons the option to dine al fresco.
Subway Restaurants is the world’s largest submarine sandwich franchise, with more than 17,000 locations in 72 countries. It is also the second largest fast-food chain in the world and has recently surpassed McDonald’s in number of locations in the United States and Canada.
