US foodservice marketer and distributor Sysco has announced that it has acquired International Food Group, for an undisclosed amount.

Located in Plant City, Florida, International Food Group is a leading distributor of foodservice products to chain restaurants in international markets. The company supplies products to quick service restaurants in the Caribbean, Central America, South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The company generated US$77.8m in sales in 2003.

“This is another step towards establishing a Sysco presence in foodservice markets outside of North America,” said Richard J Schnieders, Sysco’s chairman and chief executive officer.

“The combination of Sysco’s distribution and procurement channels with International Food Group’s expertise in delivering products to international quick service restaurants will result in customers having access to a wider variety of foods and other supplies in those marketplaces. We are very enthusiastic about the operational synergies and future growth prospects that this acquisition provides,” he added.

Joseph Blancato, who founded International Food Group in 1993, will remain as chairman, and Berry Wright, a nine-year veteran of IFG, will serve as president of the company.
