SYSCO Corporation, the largest foodservice marketer and distributor in the US, has announced that Stephen F. Smith is to become senior VP of operations, southeast region.
Smith currently is president and CEO of Sysco Food Services of Central Florida, located in Orlando. He will assume his new duties on 30 June 2002, the start of SYSCO’s fiscal year 2003.
Richard J. Schnieders, president and COO of SYSCO, said Smith, 51, began his SYSCO career in 1980 as manager of multi-unit accounts at the company’s Jackson, Miss., operation. He transferred in 1981 as VP of H&R Wholesale Company, a SYSCO operation located in El Paso, Texas, which later merged with other SYSCO companies. Smith was promoted to president and CEO of SYSCO’s Atlanta subsidiary in 1983, then transferred to the company’s Little Rock, Ark., operation in 1987 to serve in the same capacity. In 1995 he was appointed to his current duties at Sysco Food Services of Central Florida. Smith has served on SYSCO’s Directors’ Council, Merchandising Council and Operations Council during his tenure with the company.
Smith succeeds O. Wayne Duncan, 64, who will retire from the company at the end of SYSCO’s current fiscal year. Duncan began his career in 1960 as a marketing associate with the predecessor to SYSCO’s Memphis, Tenn., operation. He advanced to sales manager before being named VP of sales and marketing (1983) and president and CEO of SYSCO’s Jackson, Miss., subsidiary (1984). In 1989 he was named chairman of that company before transferring to the Atlanta subsidiary as president and CEO, a position he held until 1995 when he was promoted to his current duties.
