Domino Sugar workers have agreed to end their 20-month strike. Members of the International Longshoremen’s Association voted 56 to 48 at the beginning of March to accept a three-year contract including a one-off 5% raise, on top of the average weekly salary of about US$600.

The refinery in Brooklyn, New York, is owned by the British company, Tate and Lyle, the world’s largest sugar and sweetener corporation.


After dozens of workers broke the strike, the final agreement hardly differed from the one which was rejected at the outset. It weakens seniority rights, reduces the number of holidays and sick days and gives management the freedom to sub-contract and cut the work force by 110 people, or two-fifths.
