Tech Ion Industrial Brasil S.A. and the Titan Corporation of San Diego, California, USA, announced today that they are constructing in Brazil the world’s largest, most comprehensive electronic pasteurization and food preservation network. The network — consisting of several SureBeam® pasteurization systems — will use SureBeam’s patented technology that instantly kill harmful bacteria in food. The new joint venture will be called SureBeam-Brazil.
Titan’s SureBeam® electronic pasteurization system enhances food quality and extends its shelf life without changing its taste or texture. Similar to a microwave oven, the SureBeam® electronic pasteurization system uses ordinary electricity as its energy source.
“This is a big food safety and environmental plus for Brazil,” said Jose Francisco Bufara Medeiros, President of Tech Ion. “Brazil suffers significant post harvest losses, because we have limited infrastructure across one of the world’s largest and most sensitive environments. SureBeam extends shelf life without any environmental impact whatsoever. By working together, we will improve Brazil’s food supply and help eliminate the threat of food-borne illness.”
According to the World Health Organization, food-borne diseases are a widespread and growing public health concern. In the United States, for example, there are about 76 million cases of food-borne diseases, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths each year.
“We are pleased to be Titan’s international partner. SureBeam’s technology is revolutionary,” said Medeiros. “Since electronically pasteurized ground beef products were introduced for the first time in the American market on May 16, demand has grown tremendously. With this technology, you know that the food is free of the threat of harmful bacteria, such as E. coli and salmonella.”
“Jose Mediros is a leader and visionary. He strongly understands how to use SureBeam’s technology so that it will benefit not only this joint venture, but also the needs of the Brazilian people,” said Larry A. Oberkfell, President and CEO of SureBeam Corporation. “This relationship is a key step within our business strategy to become the premier global provider of electronic pasteurization to the food market.”
