The US-based National Food Processors Association (NFPA) has launched its first regional office in Bangkok, Thailand.

NFPA-Asia will provide service and assistance to food companies conducting business in the Southeast Asia market.


“Southeast Asia represents a key region for current and future food processing and trade, as well as for developing strategic alliances,” said John Cady, NFPA’s president and CEO.  “Such alliances will provide strong benefits to NFPA members.” 


Richard J. Dawson will serve as NFPA-Asia’s MD. He has more than 40 years of experience in food safety and food policy issues, most recently with the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). 


“International standards and trade rules related to food safety and food science will be a particular focus for NFPA-Asia,” said Dr. Rhona Applebaum, NFPA’s executive VP, for scientific rnd aegulatory Affairs, who has overseen the establishment and implementation of this new NFPA office.  “NFPA’s unique scientific expertise and credibility will provide an invaluable resource to members, as well as to governments and national organizations, in addressing ways to promote science-based international standards governing food safety and other technical issues related to food.”

NFPA-Asia’s primary activities will include:


1) Advocacy for sound food regulations/standards based on sound science;
2) Communications – advocacy/balanced messages;
3) Technical/regulatory consultation; and
4) Training/workshops. 


“Although the ultimate purpose of NFPA-Asia will be to provide service to the entire Southeast Asia region, we will concentrate on Thailand during the development phase of the new regional office,” Dawson pointed out. “Then, we look forward to expanding the scope of operations as NFPA-Asia grows in terms of staff, technical support and membership.”
