Unilever (NYSE:UN, UL) yesterday outlined its program to aid the emergency relief efforts in New York City and Washington, DC, and support for the victims of this week’s tragedy.

Charles B. Strauss, president and CEO of Unilever United States and its Home and Personal Care unit, said: “As Americans, it is impossible to make any sense or reasonable comment about this unspeakable horror. Therefore, like many companies we are focusing on helping victims families and emergency relief workers with money and much needed food and personal care products.”

Neil Beckerman, president and CEO of Unilever Bestfoods North America, added: “In addition to money and product donations, it is inspiring to see how our employees in the New York area and across the nation have responded by giving their time and support. We have made it clear that they can leave their normal duties to help their families and communities during this very difficult time.”

Unilever said that it would donate $2 million in cash to organizations responsible for helping the children of victims of the tragedy. The Unilever United States Foundation will also match all employee donations. Unilever has already donated product and services to the emergency relief effort, including food and beverages, anti-bacterial soap, toothpaste and brushes and fleet vehicles.

Unilever employs 28,000 people in the U.S., producing and marketing a wide range of foods and home and personal care products. It has U.S. headquarters offices in New York City, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, and Greenwich, CT.
