The Feeding Infants & Toddlers Study, a telephone survey commissioned by baby-food maker Gerber Products Co., found that US children that are one-to-two-years-old consume an average of 1,220 calories. Children that age require about 950 calories per day.

The soon-to-be-published study – presented at a meeting of the American Dietetic Association – revealed a diet of too much fat, sugar and salt and too few fruits and vegetables.

“By 24 months, patterns look startlingly similar to some of the problematic American dietary patterns,” said the study’s overview.
