The US Department of Agriculture has said it has asked US biotech firm Monsanto to provide additional information about its genetically modified wheat before the government completes its regulatory review.

Monsanto aims to commercialise its “Roundup Ready” wheat, engineered to resist Monsanto’s popular Roundup weedkiller, and make it available to farmers within the next two years.

The USDA asked Monsanto to provide answers to a “list of questions” regarding its wheat application, said Jim Rogers, spokesman for the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Rogers said the USDA would continue to review Monsanto’s application once the additional information has been received, reported Reuters.

Monsanto’s bid to commercialise its GM wheat has sparked fierce opposition from US and Canadian farm groups, who fear a drop in sales to foreign markets.
