US retail titan Wal-Mart has announced that Lawrence Jackson will join the company as executive vice president of the People Division, responsible for human resources strategy and programmes for the company’s 1.5 million employees.

He will also serve as a strategic advisor to other members of the company’s senior management team. Jackson joins Wal-Mart from Dollar General, where he has served as president and chief operating officer since September 2003. The move is effective 15 October.

Jackson, who will report to Wal-Mart chief executive Lee Scott, will lead a wide range of human resource areas. This includes planning, training, executive development, recruiting, succession planning, human resources technology, culture change and regulatory issues. He succeeds Coleman Peterson, who retired as executive vice president of the People Division in April of this year.

Meanwhile, discount retailer Dollar General said its chairman and chief executive officer, David Perdue, would assume the president and chief operating officer’s responsibilities for the time being.
