US weight-loss service provider Weight Watchers International has reported an 8.8% rise in first-quarter net income, on an increase in revenue of 18%.

The company reported net income of US$40.6m for the quarter to 29 March, compared to $37.3m in the year ago period.

Operating income, excluding some foreign currency effects, was $79.4m, a year-on-year rise of 12%. The company’s revenue rose to $251.5m, compared to $212.5m a year earlier.

Worldwide attendance at company-owned operation rose 8% year-on-year, or 6% excluding acquisitions. Worldwide product sales grew 25%.

“During the quarter we experienced solid growth, driven by our international operations,” president and chief executive Linda Huett was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

She added that the company is “comfortable” with its full-year earnings forecast of between $1.63 and $1.71 a share.
