The group was found guilty of permitting children under the age of 16 to work longer and later in the evening than legally approved. In a news release yesterday [Monday], the US Department of Labor said that 127 minors at the Alabama company’s ten grocery stores had worked more than three hours on school days, more than 18 hours in a school week, or more than eight hours on non-school days.
In addition, the company had illegally employed an 11-year-old, the Department confirmed. “Work experience is valuable for young teens. But work should be legal, under safe conditions and not interfere with their education,” said Alfred Perry, regional administrator for the Department of Labor’s wage and hour division.
