Representatives from both companies declined to comment on the rumours, which did not specify how much Wild Oats might be sold for, reported Dow Jones Business News.

One analyst said it would make sense for Kroger to expand into the natural food sector by acquiring Wild Oats. “Organic and natural grocery retail has been much faster growing than traditional” grocery retail, the analyst was quoted by Dow Jones as saying.

Another analyst, however, agreed that Kroger may want to expand into natural food retail but said that buying Wild Oats Markets was not the best way to go about it because Wild Oats’ stores are too small.
