Van Loon Group, a Netherlands-based meat-products firm, has acquired local peer Verhey Vlees subject to approval by competition authorities.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by Van Loon, which is headquartered in Son near Eindhoven and is made up of six companies: itself, Brandenburg, Enkgo, Van de Raa, Meat Friends and Best Star Meat. It also produces meat-alternative products.

Verhey Vlees was founded in 1895 and is run and owned by brothers Max and Bart Verhey, the fourth generation of the family. The company has been put on the market because there is no one in the succession line to take over the business.

Max Verhey, who is general manager, said: “Of course we think it’s a shame that we don’t have any successors in our family. But for us, the priority is now to offer our customers, employees and other stakeholders durability and a future. Van Loon Group is the best option for this.”

After the takeover, which is subject to approval from the Consumer Authority and Market, Van Loon said it wants to concentrate its beef activities in Nuth, a municipality in the province of Limburg.

“The high-tech production location offers the possibility to process beef more efficiently,” according to Van Loop, which acquired Enkgo in May from Dutch firm Vivera Foodgroup. “Access to the purchase and sales channels of Verhey Vlees also gives Van Loon Group more options for further expanding its beef concepts.”

Van Loon, which counts Erik van Loon as chairman, introduced its plant-based The Blue Butcher range in October, adding to the No Meat Inside line. The companies in the group supply both retail and foodservice channels.
