Greenyard, the Belgium-based vegetable products supplier, has issued a recall of products in the UK taking in lines sold at a number of the country’s major grocers.

The company’s UK frozen-foods arm, Greenyard Frozen UK, has pulled certain products sold under private labels for Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Aldi, as well as some sold under its own branded lines.

The recall, published by the UK’s Food Standards Agency, was made due to the risk the foods were contaminated with a strain of listeria.

“Greenyard Frozen UK Ltd has taken the precautionary step of voluntarily recalling various frozen vegetable products because they might contain Listeria monocytogenes,” the FSA said in a recall notice yesterday (5 July). The list of products recalled was updated today.

On Wednesday, the publicly-listed Greenyard issued a stock-exchange notice to announce it was recalling frozen vegetable products made at a plant in Hungary “due to potential listeria contamination”.

Greenyard said the products were made at its factory in Baja between 13 August 2016 and 20 June 2018.

“The recall initiative of these products does not imply that they are actually contaminated, and Greenyard is committed to taking a maximum of precautionary measures as food safety is Greenyard’s number one priority and Greenyard wants its commitment to food safety to be clear towards its customers and end consumers,” Greenyard said.

“Currently, Greenyard is not yet in a position to estimate the financial impact of this recall initiative and will inform the market at a later stage when more information is available. The turnover of Greenyard Frozen Hungary for AY 2017/2018 amounts to EUR24m (US$28.1m).”
