The Food Industries Research Institute in Hanoi, Vietnam, has outlined details for a new five-year project designed to bring the country’s food processing industry up “to speed the current technological advancement”.
According to a report by Food Ingredients Online, the project, under the management of the Ministry of Industry and Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to increase the level of competence in food processing technology, and streamline existing processes for transferring technology to medium and small-scale food processing facilities.
The report adds that as part of the plan, officials will evaluate the major processed farm products in Vietnam and assess basic and applied technology transfer programmes related to the fields of microbiology and enzymes. The transfer of basic and practical knowledge related to ingredient analysis and food quality control methodologies will also be analysed.
Vietnam hopes that knowledge sharing will create conditions to support stable increases in agricultural production, encourage diversification of agricultural production, and expand the food processing industry.
The existing food processing industry in Vietnam represents only a modest portion of the country’s national GDP, attributable to the lack of modern food processing technologies and insufficient food-quality controls. The report notes that the project is expected to expand research into food processing technologies, modernise the food industry, notably the smaller enterprises in rural areas.
