Officials said the outbreak in the province of Bac Lieu has so far killed 3,400 chickens, while a further 2,000 chickens have been culled at three nearby farms in a bid to stop the spread of the virus, reported Dow Jones International News.

It is not year clear whether the latest outbreak is a high pathogenic strain, such as the H5N1 strain, which resulted in the deaths of millions of birds across Asia earlier in the year. The disease also spread to humans, killing 16 people in Vietnam and eight in Thailand. During the outbreak Vietnam culled around 43 million poultry, around 15% of its stock.
