Seafood exporters in Vietnam are concerned that the terrorist attacks in the US will soon affect their burgeoning marine exports.

So far, the impact of the US events has been minimal on the country’s seafood companies but as Truong Dinh Hoe, a representative of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Processors and Exporters, explained: “After the attack on September 11, a few US customers wanted to suspend orders.”

“Vietnamese trade partners are hopeful that normal trade will soon resume,” he added.

The sector is worth around US$1.8bn a year, and posted 23% growth last year. World prices of seafood have fallen in the wake of the US crisis however while importers wait for the dollar to stabilise. The US market accounts for 27% of Vietnam’s total seafood exports.
