Earlier this week the EU said it was intensifying the testing of shrimps from Vietnam and Myanmar, as well as shrimps and chicken from Thailand, after antibiotics had been discovered during spot checks.
Nitrofuran residues were discovered in shrimps imported from all three countries, while chloramphenicol was discovered in chicken imported from Thailand.
However, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh today responded to the charges: Experts have informed us that there are no antibiotic or chloramphenicol substances in Vietnamese shrimp exports to the EU.” She added that the government of Vietnam introduced stringent regulation in 1999 to prevent toxic substances entering seafood exports.
