Dutch meat giant Vion has announced changes to its production network in Germany.

Vion is closing a cutting facility at its Frankfurt am Main slaughterhouse in September. Customers will be supplied from sites in Crailsheim and Hilden.

Meanwhile, the company is moving the slaughtering carried out at a production site in Anklam in north-east Germany to a plant 300km west in Bad Bramstedt, just north of Hamburg.

The company has recently invested EUR1.5m (US$1.7m) in "technical facilities" at the Bad Bramstedt site and said the plant can "easily absorb" the volume from the Anklam factory.

The Bad Bramstedt plant has a processing capacity of more than 3,000 animals per week. Vion said output at Anklam "had recently dropped to as little as 700 cattle a week". Production there will stop by 30 September.

Vion said 100 staff work at the Frankfurt facility, while 70 are employed at Anklam. A spokesperson declined to comment on the impact the moves will have on jobs.
