It warns species such as sharks, orange roughy and roundnose grenadier are threatened by overfishing, with the problem complicated by less than comprehensive information on some species.
For instance, it says regarding “anglerfish…poor data undermines scientific advice and related management measures”. Meanwhile, the council says that for traditionally caught fish, existing conservation measures are too weak, recommending bans on catching southern hake and reducing North Sea catches of skate, ray, plaice and sole.
