The member states of the European Union and the United States are among the 110 signatories of a new UN Food and Agriculture Organisation Plan of Action against illegal unregulated and unreported fishing. The agreement includes a commitment by flag states to ensure that they do not grant fishing permits to any fishing business that has been involved in illegal catches, which the FAO blames for decimating some fish stocks and preventing the recovery of exhausted areas.
