
Yakult Honsha Co., the Japanese maker of the popular probiotic drink of the same name, saw net income surge in the fiscal first quarter ended June, along with a noticeable increase in sales at its overseas food and beverage operations.
Profit rose almost 47% to JPY8bn (US$71.8m) from a year earlier, according to the company’s earnings statement.

Total revenue was up 4.3% at JPY94.5bn. While the Tokyo-based company booked F&B net sales of JPY52bn in Japan, overseas revenue for that sector climbed 9% to JPY36.8bn. Yakult Honsha has businesses spread across Asia and Oceania – which generates most of its income – and to a lesser degree in the Americas and western Europe.
Yakult Honsha’s operating income, or EBIT, was up almost 38% to JPY10bn to translate into an uptick in the profit margin to 10.6% from 8%.
In May, the company reported lower sales but higher earnings for the year to the end of March.
