The government of Zambia yesterday [Monday] said it had given the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) permission to distribute its genetically modified maize – but only to refugees.

The grain must first be milled to prevent it falling into the wrong hands and being sown. Vice-President Enoch Kavindele said that GM maize should not be distributed further into the countryside, expressing concern that GM grains could contaminate local crops and therefore exclude Zambian crops from export to the EU.


WFP Executive Director James Morris said: “We fully respect your right and responsibility to make the decision of rejection of GM food.”
