Struggling US supermarket group Winn-Dixie Stores has announced the appointment of regional vice president Brad Spooner to the newly created position of vice president, strategic initiatives.

In his new position, Spooner will direct the implementation of the company’s strategic initiatives aimed at improving Winn-Dixie’s competitive position and operational performance. He will report directly to Winn-Dixie president and chief executive officer Frank Lazaran. Spooner joined Winn-Dixie in November 2002 as senior director of operations after spending 20 years with Randalls Food Markets, now part of Safeway.


Winn-Dixie also announced the appointment of Chuck Newsom as regional vice president for the central region, which includes parts of Alabama, Florida and Georgia. Newsom was most recently with Eckerd Corporation in New York, where he was a senior group vice president, responsible for 458 stores.
