Damika-owned meat processing firm British Bacon Supplies has blamed difficult trading conditions for its decision to close its Huddersfield factory this week, insisting the site was “unable to operate at sustainable efficiency levels”.

The plant will close on Friday (30 June). “Despite investing heavily in the factory over the past five years, difficult trading conditions have meant that we are unable to operate at sustainable efficiency levels,” the company said. “Our staff have been informed and are being supported throughout the process. Where appropriate employees will be offered jobs at other locations within our group.”

Last year the business, which owns the Taylor’s brand, was hit by heavy flooding at its Halifax factory, which subsequently put additional pressure on the Huddersfield plant.

The company would not disclose how many employees would be affected by the closure, which will see manufacturing moved to other Damika sites.

“Damika is part of a large strong group of companies and therefore production will move to highly efficient manufacturing sites within the group,” confirmed the statement. “We will continue to provide all of our customers with first-class bacon, an impeccable service and competitive prices.”

Staff were informed last month of the decision to close the plant. The company has supplied bacon for foodservice and retail customers for over 25 years, and its products are stocked in supermarkets, butchers and delis, as well as cafes, service stations and holiday resorts.
