Indian food and tobacco major ITC is establishing two new production units in its home state of West Bengal to make branded noodles, snacks, chips, biscuits and wheat flour.

“This would facilitate more efficient and faster access to markets as well as ensure fresher food products,” an ITC spokesperson told just-food.

One will be built in Panchla (West Bengal) by January 2017 on 74,300 square metres of land. It will make YiPPee! noodles, plus Bingo! snacks and potato chips. “It will also have dedicated space for the production of new categories of food products as and when they are launched,” the company said.

A second plant on 37,100 square metres in nearby Uluberia, will from May produce Sunfeast biscuits, Bingo! snacks and Aashirvaad wheat flour.

ITC will invest US$440m in the two projects. It is also developing an information technology and knowledge unit in Rajarhat, also in West Bengal.

Announcing the projects yesterday (February 11), ITC chairman Y.C. Deveshwar also hinted the company is planning to develop frozen shrimps and fruit products.

In reported quotes confirmed by ITC, Deveshwar said: “We already export shrimps, but there is equal big opportunity to sell packaged frozen shrimps and frozen dehydrated fruit and vegetables in the domestic market as part of our plans to grow the [company’s] newer FMCG business to US$15bn.”
