New chief executive Dale Morrison said the company was also considering expansion in India and Russia, as it tries to increase its presence in underdeveloped markets, reported the Globe and Mail.

“In 24 months, we would hope to have a larger stake in China,” Morrison was quoted by the Canadian newspaper as saying.

McCain, whose core product is frozen French fries, said the company plans to first establish a sales presence in the targeted countries, importing its products from abroad. Once sales volumes are sufficiently big, McCain plans to develop local production plants.

In China the company has already been proceeding with the initial stages of its plan, and has been studying potato growing in China with a view to setting up a production plant there in the future.
