“At the beginning of this year 696,000 hectares, 4% of UK farmland, was under organic production, up from 30,000 hectares in 1993. The market is projected to grow by 9% a year to 2007,” said Organic Farming Minister Ben Bradshaw.

One other area where progress has been reported is in the amount of organic produce provided by UK farms. When the plan was written only 30% of organic produce consumed in the UK was produced domestically. Now that level has risen to 44% and the aim is to increase it further to 70% by 2010.
