German discount retailers Aldi and Lidl have continued to lose market share amid increased competition from large grocery chains such as Tesco and Dunnes Stores.

According to the latest figures from Taylor Nelson Sofres, Aldi and Lidl had a market share of 4.8% for February, compared to 5.4% in the year-ago period, reported the Sunday Times. Their market share reached a peak of 5.6% in September.


The discounters are facing intense price competition, led by UK-based supermarket giant Tesco, which has a 24.9% share of the market in Ireland. The company recently added around 700 products to its low-end “Value” range in a bid to compete with the discount retailers, the Sunday Times said.


Family-owned Irish retailer Dunnes Stores, which has a 22% market share, has also introduced discounts on several ranges.
