Mexican supermarket retailer Grupo Gigante has said its US unit has opened its fifth supermarket in California after reaching an agreement with local authorities.
Mexico’s third-largest supermarket group said that the new store, which is located in the Anaheim Plaza shopping centre, offers fresh tortillas and Mexican food.
Officials from the Anaheim Redevelopment Agency had objected to the Gigante store on the grounds that a specialty store, which caters primarily to the Hispanic market, was not appropriate for a regional shopping centre, reported Dow Jones International News.
“The opening was made with great success, after the company was able to settle favourably the opposition of authorities.
“The opening of this store is in response to the growth of the Hispanic population in this city during the past 20 years,” Gigante said.
