UK grocery retailer Somerfield has said its group sales rose 1.1% on a like-for-like basis for the year to 24 April 2004.

Like-for-like sales at the group’s Somerfield stores rose 2.0%, having risen 2.2% in the first half and 1.8% in the second half. Like-for-like sales at Kwik Save stores slid 0.1%, after a decline of 1.0% in the first half and a rise of 1.0% in the second half.

Somerfield said its like-for-like sales growth was driven by the further roll out of its store refit programme and the continued improvement to store operations and product ranges.

“The store renewal programme is benefiting our customers in both the Somerfield and Kwik Save fascias. The renewal programme and portfolio alignment for both fascias will continue with pace to strengthen the group’s position in an increasingly competitive market place,” said executive chairman John von Spreckelsen.

Yesterday [Wednesday], Somerfield announced it is to drop the Kwik Save banner in Scotland, converting some stores to the Somerfield format and closing the remainder.
