UK supermarket group Morrisons has said unions have withdrawn their threat of strikes and other industrial action over the proposed closure of three distribution centres.

“Discussions with the T&GWU and GMB covering the unions’ desire for joint national bargaining and the company’s need to reduce distribution capacity, have reached a conclusion acceptable to both parties,” Morrisons said, adding that the company would now progress with the reshaping of its distribution network.

Unions feared around 2,500 jobs could be lost as a result of the closures, which are aimed at streamlining Morrisons’ distribution network following the acquisition of Safeway.
