Especially since the 11 September attacks, military forces and alliances have been increasingly concerned about bioterror attacks via food distribution chains. As a result, NATO has set up a ‘food chain security’ project within its Science for Peace and Security programme (SPS).
It has staged an inaugural meeting with COST, which is managed by the European Union (EU) to identify “gaps in research” and cooperating to fill them, said a joint COST-NATO statement.
NATO is developing sophisticated risk assessment models to identify vulnerabilities and protect them against terrorist or military subversion. A NATO note said: “The nature of the terrorist threat against the food system comprising production, distribution, processing and catering can be very diverse and unpredictable and involve chemical and biological agents of various kinds.”
