Developed under the committee of the Council of Europe’s European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes, the code has been written because of concerns that new fish farming techniques are posing health and welfare problems, as well as opportunities to widen production. It contains guidelines on stockmanship, inspections, farm construction, management, feeding, water quality and other issues.
The Council of Europe is separate from the EU, covering eastern and western European countries, including Russia.
