The European Commission has asked European Union ministers that EU member states should continue to import organic meat and other foodstuffs freely for one more year until December 2006, whilst it establishes an EU control system.

Brussels is to create ‘technical evaluation bodies” checking whether claimed “organic” imports meet EU guidelines for such foods. The new system should have been established by this December, when member states’ right to source organic foodstuffs would have been curtailed. However, the Commission has admitted: “Sufficient time is needed to develop and establish this new permanent system”, adding: “Trade in organic products should not be unnecessarily disrupted”.
