Nestlé has announced another Ft55bn ($152.3m) of investment for its Purina pet-food factory in Hungary.

In October the food giant announced it was investing around Ft90bn to open two new production units at its site in Bük, which would increase output by 66% annually from approximately 150,000 tonnes to 250,000 tonnes.

According to Nestlé’s latest statement, the commissioning of the new factory unit will conclude the five-year development cycle that began in 2020, taking the company’s overall investment in the Bük factory to Ft300bn.

The construction work for the latest extension started last month. According to the plans, the [manufacturing] lines will be in place in the second half of the year.

Production is expected to start in 2025, said the Maggi sauces and KitKat confectionery owner.

“The new plant will produce more than 50,000 tons of pet food,” said the company.

“With today’s announcement, a five-year development period in the life of the Bük factory is coming to an end, during which we will implement a total investment worth Ft300bn, which can be considered the largest investment in the food industry in Hungary,” said Péter Noszek, managing director of Nestlé Hungária.

Noszek said that more than 600 new jobs will have been created in Bük when the project is complete.

Nestlé said that “the Bük factory plays a decisive role in the fact that Hungary ranks 13th in the global ranking in terms of pet food exports,” without citing the source of data.

The company employs nearly 2,800 people in Hungary, in its three domestic factories and headquarters in Budapest, and has so far invested more than Ft382bn in the country.
