Ilas, which would not reveal the acquisition’s financial terms, hopes to make cheese and powdered milk at the site, located in Ciechanow, north of Warsaw, manager Ricardo Gonzalez revealed to just-food on Wednesday (July 13).

Gonzalez said Spain´s demand for dairy products sharply outstrips its production quota, limiting the number of goods the company can make for local and international distribution. Poland’s production quota is 50% higher than in Spain, Gonzalez said. Therefore, he continued, Ilas hopes to produce milk-derived products in Poland to grow its market share in Western and Eastern Europe.

Poland also provides an ideal beachhead to access Eastern Europe’s big markets such as Russia, Gonzalez added.

In Spain, Ilas operates under the Reny Picot brand, selling packaged and powdered milk as well as a range of desserts and cheese. The company makes 200,000 tonnes of cheese a year, Gonzalez detailed.
The company has a large factory in Asturias (which Gonzalez heads), and owns plants in the US, Mexico, France and China, where it markets diverse milk-processed products under Reny Picot.
